Humber Zero is a world-scale project to reduce the carbon emissions of critical industry in the Immingham industrial area using carbon capture. The first phase of the project is a consortium between Phillips 66 Limited and VPI Immingham LLP and aims to remove up to 3.8 million tonnes of CO₂ from the Immingham industrial area every year by around 2027.

The carbon emissions from some processes at the VPI Immingham Combined Heat and Power Plant and Phillips 66 Limited Humber Refinery will be captured and compressed. The CO₂ will then be transported off site via pipeline (independent projects) for storage deep under the bed of the North Sea.

One of the UK’s most modern and efficient natural gas plants will contribute to achieving Net Zero through the deployment of CCUS capabilities.

West Burton B (“WBB”) is a highly flexible and efficient Combined Cycle Gas Turbine Plant with a combined output of 1,333 megawatts of energy including 49 megawatts of battery storage capacity. WBB supplies enough electricity to meet the demand of ~2.6million homes in the UK as well as providing essential services to the national electricity transmission system facilitating the pathway to a low carbon economy.

WBB intends to deploy post-combustion technology to capture up to 90% of its carbon emissions as part of its wider decarbonisation strategy for the site. This strategy will include the deployment of hydrogen co-firing and the development and construction of further electricity storage facilities.

The partnership with Viking CCS facilitates these ambitions and contributes to Viking CCS’s target of transporting and storing 10 million tonnes of CO₂ per annum by 2030.

The Port of Immingham, owned and operated by Associated British Ports (ABP), is part of ABP’s Humber ports along with Grimsby, Hull and Goole which together constitute the UK's largest ports complex. ABP is investing in new infrastructure with a new jetty to service the import and export handling of liquid bulk products. In addition to handling green ammonia, the jetty is being designed so that it can accommodate other cargoes connected to the energy transition, including the import of liquified carbon dioxide (CO₂) from carbon capture and storage projects for sequestration in the North Sea – thereby playing a significant role in the UK’s energy transition.

This new infrastructure aims to provide an at-scale opportunity to connect otherwise stranded industrial clusters in the UK to Harbour Energy’s high-capacity offshore CO₂ storage sites in the Southern North Sea. This exciting development underpins both future inward investment to the Humber and Lincolnshire regions and acts to safeguard industrial jobs across the UK in support the UK government’s efforts to decarbonise industry in the UK and meet the UK Government’s net zero emissions targets.

RWE is the UK’s largest operator of Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) power plants. Our 7GW gas fleet complements our 2.8GW renewables portfolio by providing security for the country’s energy supply. RWE’s long term vision is to be carbon neutral by 2040 across all worldwide operation, and our UK operations are leading in delivering this goal. 

RWE has a wealth of experience in the design and operation of carbon capture plants, having been involved in the research and development of carbon capture technologies since 2008 .  We will be investing tens of millions of pounds as we develop low carbon generation options using both carbon capture and hydrogen technologies to decarbonise our sites.

We have commenced the necessary technical studies to investigate the feasibility of retro-fitting carbon capture technology at Staythorpe, and have started development of a new state-of-the-art CCGT equipped with carbon capture technology near the Humber. Together these projects could capture and remove roughly 6 million tonnes of carbon dioxide per year.

To support these low carbon ambitions, RWE is working in partnership with Harbour Energy’s Viking CCS project to facilitate transportation and storage of the captured CO₂ emissions.

Cory is one of the UK’s leading recycling and waste management companies. It operates an EfW facility in Bexley, South London, which diverts c. 800,000 tonnes of residual wate from landfill each year and converts it into baseload electricity for the national grid. It is currently developing its second facility, Riverside 2, on the same site, and plans to install carbon capture technology which will cover both facilities and be capable of capturing c 1.3 million tonnes of CO₂ a year by 2030.

Cory transports the majority of the waste it processes via a fleet of tugs and barges, and is one of the largest commercial operators on the River Thames. It plans to use this maritime expertise to work with Viking to explore the potential transportation of the captured CO₂ via ship to the Port of Immingham.

Drax is the UK’s single largest provider of renewable power, generating 8% of the country’s total. Once the largest coal fired power station in Western Europe, the power station was converted between 2012- 2018 to use sustainable biomass. Drax now plans to invest £2bn installing bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS), turning the power station into the world’s largest carbon removal facility. It is targeting 2030 to have the first BECCS unit online, capturing 4Mt carbon per year. 

Drax has agreed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Viking CCS for a pipeline study to explore options that could connect one BECCS unit at Drax Power Station to the depleted Viking gas fields in the southern North Sea.
