Capturing CO₂ at scale

We are working with several primary emitters in the Humber region, to capture large volumes of CO₂.

Our Cluster members are taking the lead in the first key stage of the CCS solution – capturing CO₂ at scale, so we can transport it quickly and cost-effectively through our pipelines and store it safely in our Viking reservoirs 2.7km below the seabed, 140km offshore in the Southern North Sea.

Building for the future

The Humber region is the most industrialised and highest CO₂-emitting region in the UK, so there is a large local demand for CCS. In Viking CCS, we have the capacity to meet that demand. Our Cluster members are some of the biggest emitters in the area, so there are high volume CO₂ streams that are very close to each other. This in turn makes our CCS solution more straightforward and cost-effective. We can help our members decarbonise their businesses and industry, which is great for the future, for jobs, and for the wider community. It will bring more business that will bring investment, jobs and growth as we build for the future.

CO₂ shipping value chain

Moreover, we are exploring how we can help CO₂ emitters that are not connected to a CO₂ pipeline. We are discussing shipping options with Associated British Ports (ABP) – opening possibilities of bringing new business from emitters around the UK who do not have access to CO₂ storage. Together with our Cluster members, we are committed to capturing 10 million tonnes of emissions per year by 2030.
